Distance Learners: The assignments for Specials Classes will now be in your Homeroom Teacher’s Google Classroom. The separate Google Classroom for Specials will no longer be active.

Brick and mortar scholars: you will no longer need to complete activities on Google Classroom.

 * We are working very hard to provide your scholar with feedback to all of the work being turned in. In order to see how your student is doing on assignments turned in follow the steps provided below:

Art

Kindergarten

Kindergarten students were inspired by Henri Matisse’s seaweed cutouts. They did a wonderful job painting the background and practicing their scissor skills.

First Grade

First grade was inspired by Gustav Klimt’s “Tree of Life” painting. They did a wonderful job using gold to paint spiral line trees. Next, they cut out and glued on metallic paper to add texture and detail.

Second Grade

Second grade used watercolors and were inspired by Wassily Kandinsky’s “Squares with Concentric Circles.”

Third Grade

Our scholars are delving into our study of texture this week! I am so excited to continue incorporating a variety of texture activities into their second quarter.

Fourth Grade

This week, we began learning about the element of art, value! We have been busy making value charts and will explore monochromatic value scales next week.

Fifth Grade

To begin quarter two, we are studying texture in 5th grade. I am so excited to see how the texture samplers we will be drawing come out.

Sixth Grade

This week, students are exploring the element of space by learning the basics of perspective drawing.

 

Music

November is the month of Frederic Chopin!

K-2

The kindergarten worked more with long and short notes, first grade is writing quarter notes and 2 eighth notes, and second grade is now writing music on the staff! We are about to have a new composer of the month: Chopin!

World Languages

Spanish K-1

This week in Spanish, we are learning about our emotions and how to express them through conversation.  Next week, our topics will be “home” and “school.”

Spanish 2

Last week, we learned about Día de Muertos and how it is celebrated. We also learned how to draw a calaverita. This week, we are going to prepare to read a Spanish chapter book in class about an elefante named Edi beginning the week after next. We will look at different animals and how we can describe them.

Spanish 4-5

Last week, we learned about Día de Muertos and how it is celebrated. We made some beautiful crafts - your scholars are artísticos! This week, we are going to begin preparing to read a Spanish chapter book about a capibara named Carlos. We will be learning about capybaras and talking about the country in which the book is set, Ecuador.

Latin 5-7

Salvete!

This week in 5th grade, scholars were introduced to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd declensions. Next week, they will continue to look at the noun declensions.

This week in 6th grade, scholars continued to look at the past tenses. Next week, they will look in more detail at the perfect stems.

This week in 7th grade, scholars studied the accusative plural forms of nouns. Next week, they will look at superlative adjectives.

Kindergarten

We are wrapping up our study of geometric and organic shapes this week in art class. We will draw an organic flower shape together, inspired by a Henri Matisse cut out. We will learn about another element of art next quarter: value.

First Grade

We are wrapping up our study of lines for quarter one in art class this week. We will draw a spiral tree inspired by Gustav Klimt’s “Tree of Life.” Next quarter we will focus on another element of art: texture. 

Second Grade

Art

 

Kindergarten

We are continuing our study of organic shapes and continuing to practice drawing shapes with curved lines. We will draw three shapes inspired by Henri Matisse cutouts this week.

First Grade

We are going to draw a spiral line snail together in art class this week. We are continuing our study of lines and working on practicing outlining shapes and learning about how lines can create beautiful pictures.

Second Grade

In art class this week we are learning more about organic shapes. Together we will practice drawing seaweed shapes inspired by the artist Henri Matisse. We will use similar colors and create a composition that is inspired by his cutouts.

Third Grade

Our 3rd graders are hard at work recreating the great work by Van Gogh, Starry Night!

Fourth Grade

Our 4th graders are using a variety of media to create class carpet pages! Scholars are applying elements of shape, line, pattern, and symmetry throughout the creation of this project.

Fifth Grade

This week, we continued our practice of gesture portrait drawings in preparation for our portrait project!

Sixth Grade

This week, students will continue their explorations with form by creating drawings that suggest volume or by creating physical objects.

Kindergarten

This week we learned more about High and Low!

First Grade

The first grade has been learning all about Mendelssohn and also about writing quarter notes and eighth notes.

Second Grade

The second grade is writing music on the staff! Step by step the scholars are learning how to notate the songs we’ve sung since kindergarten on their own.

Third Grade

Scholars, are you up for the challenge?

On October 14, we will have a short quiz over the Treble Clef Staff lines and spaces! You will also join me for an interesting video all about Mendelssohn. There will be a short exit ticket.

This week in Spanish, we are learning the numbers (one through ten).  Next week will be set aside for review.

This week, scholars will learn about how to talk about loved ones including family and friends. We will explore ways to describe a person including age and personality (review) as well as physical descriptions.

 

Latin 5-7

This week in 5th grade, scholars reviewed the nominative and accusative cases by reading a Latin passage called in triclinio (In the dining room). Next week, they will solidify their knowledge of the noun cases and the different parts of a sentence.

 

This week in 6th grade, scholars continued to look at the perfect and imperfect tenses by reading a Latin passage Felix. Next week, they will review perfect and imperfect tenses in addition to reading Felix et fur (Felix and the thief) in class.

 

This week in 7th grade, scholars read a story in Latin called fabula mirabilis (the Marvelous Story). Next week, they will study in more detail the new perfect stems.

In art class this week we are learning more about organic shapes. We will read the book “Henri’s Scissors” a story about the artist Henri Matisse. Then we will draw and color a seaweed shape together.

 

First Grade

In art class this week we are continuing to learn about lines. We will draw and outline a shape to make a curved maze line design.

Second Grade

This week we are learning more about organic shapes. We will read a book about the artist Henri Matisse called “Henri’s Scissors”. Then we will outline and color five different seaweed shapes together.

Third Grade

This past week, we began our Starry Night project! This will continue for the rest of the quarter. I am so excited to see all of the beautiful work that will be made!

Fourth Grade

This week, our 4th grade artists explored Medieval European art! We are so excited for our project inspired by the illuminated manuscripts.

Fifth Grade

This week, we observed how contour line, shape, and form come together to create portraits. We will continue exploring the works of John Singer Sargent and begin our project on portraiture soon.

Sixth Grade

This week, students will continue their explorations with form by creating drawings that suggest volume or by creating physical objects.

October is the month of Felix Mendelssohn!

 

Kindergarten

This week we continued to work with reading long and short sounds. We also learned about our new composer of the Month Felix Mendelsohn.

First Grade

We learned all about quarter notes and two-eighth notes this week! Students also reviewed the string instruments of the orchestra.

Second Grade

It was all about the treble clef this week! We practiced drawing them on staffs. Next week we will be moving towards writing short songs on the staff.

Third Grade

Happy October Families and Scholars!

We have completed our time with Franz Schubert, and have also been introduced to the dynamic terms forte and piano. This week, scholars will be introduced to our October Composer of the Month, Felix Mendelssohn, and will practice recognizing forte and piano in one of his pieces.

It also seems like there has been some confusion about the lines and spaces of our Treble Clef staff, so you will be seeing a Treble Clef staff step-by-step mini guide in your Google Classroom. We will have a quiz over our Treble Clef staff on October 7.

P.E.

Next week the children in brick and mortar will continue learning new volleyball skills.  They will learn how to serve the ball both underhand and overhand.  They will be able to serve the ball over the volleyball net to gauge the distance and strength needed.  Parents- we still need the scholars to bring a water bottle every single day!

 

Our remote children will be learning how to bump and set using a partner or a wall outside or inside (with parent permission). 

 

World Languages

 

Spanish K-1

This week in Spanish, we are reviewing the vocabulary for family members.  Plus, we are learning our colors.  Next week, we will learn the numbers (one through ten).

Spanish 2-4

This week, scholars are learning descriptions. We will practice our numbers as we describe our ages (aside from Señora Manning - a lady never reveals her age!), and we will learn adjectives to describe our personalities. If you have the chance, ask your scholar to teach you how to add numbers in Spanish!

 

Latin 5-7

This week in 5th grade, scholars looked over stage 1 and 2 vocabulary in addition to the nominative and accusative cases. Next week, they will continue to study the nominative and accusative cases as we read Latin.

 

This week in 6th grade, scholars continued to look at the perfect and imperfect tenses. Next week, they will further increase their understanding of  the past tenses.

 

This week in 7th grade, scholars started a new chapter, while continuing their study of the perfect and imperfect tenses. Next week, they will study new perfect stems.
