Kindergarten

This week in Kindergarten we were inspired by an apple still life painting by Henri Matisse. We outlined round apple shapes, colored the background of the paper, and then used watercolors to paint the apples yellow and red.

First Grade

We are continuing our study of space this week in first grade. We began the week by adding woven paper to a Texas flag mural in the hallway and talked about objects that overlap. Then we talked about the foreground, middle ground, and background as we sketched a house. We looked at landscape paintings by Claude Monet and Grant Wood.

Second Grade

In second grade this week we continued our study of the human form. We are looking at the proportions and the forms that make up the human figure. We also colored our mannequin sketches with shades and tints from one specific color, combining our study of value from last quarter and form in quarter three.

 3,4, 5

 Hello! We have had so much fun exploring some new elements of art. Here’s what we have been up to:

3rd graders were introduced to Space as an element of art. This week, we created a masterpiece using only colored paper, glue, scissors, and pencil! Drawing inspiration from trees, we created a positive and negative space picture. We can’t wait to show you all the final product!

 4th graders were introduced to Form as an element of art. This week, the scholars shined and practiced drawing highlight and shadow on a variety of three dimensional forms. We are so excited to start a drawing next week using chalk and oil pastels!

 5th graders also began our unit on Space as an element of art. This week, we finished up our abstract cube drawings using linear perspective. Coming up, we will use the same technique to illustrate a city block. We are eagerly anticipating the opportunity to use watercolor on this next artwork!

 Sixth Grade

This week, students have started the process of creating finished works of art by sketching out 10 thumbnails for ideas inspired by their 9 core virtues.

 

Music

Our composer of the Month for March is Igor Stravinsky!

K-2

All our music scholars are practicing rhythmic dictation. The kindergarten are working with quarter notes and two eighth notes, the first grade have learned the quarter note rest, and the second grade were introduced to the half note. We have been listening to Grieg’s “Morning Mood.”

Third Grade

Coming Up - With one week until Spring Break, scholars will spend time enjoying a study of our new composer of the month, Igor Stravinsky. We will visit a narration of the story behind his work, The Firebird, in our reading of The Tale of the Firebird by Genaddy Spirin. To jump back into singing within the pentatonic scale, we will sing “How Many Miles to Babylon?” in groups!

 Music Test Update - Due to the icy weather during our original music testing week, scholars reviewed and prepared for their test set for February 24th. All tests taken were passed back on Friday, February 26. Please check your scholar’s test; if the grade earned was below passing, it will require a parent signature. All tests requiring parent signatures are due back on Monday, March 1.

What is Third Grade listening to this week? “Infernal Dance” from The Firebird by Igor Stravinsky.

P.E.

This week, our scholars are learning about hockey.  Many didn’t realize that there are two types of hockey, field hockey and ice hockey.  They are practicing how to hold a hockey stick, and how to use it properly.  We are mastering our basketball skills, passing, dribbling and shooting.  Friday will be game day!  The students will be able to choose between playing hockey or basketball. 

World Languages

Spanish K-1

We are learning key words, phrases, and simple sentences about animals.  We have covered Los Pollitos and are now looking at farm animals.  Next week, we will study the Itsy Bitsy Spider in Spanish.  We will be coloring, cutting, and pasting.  Please double check with your scholar to make sure that he or she has these supplies.

Spanish 2

After working hard to learn new vocabulary last week, scholars will be reading it in context in chapter 5 of Edi el elefante. Scholars will receive their graded vocabulary quizzes on Monday, and those will need to be signed and returned by Wednesday. On Wednesday, scholars will have a mini-comprehension quiz over the events of chapter 5.

Spanish 3-4

This week, scholars will be reading chapter 6 of El capibara con botas. On Tuesday (3rd) or Wednesday (4th), scholars will receive their graded vocabulary quizzes over interrogative words. Those will need to be signed and returned by the following Spanish. At the end of the following class session, scholars will have a mini-comprehension quiz over the events of chapter 6.

Latin 5-7

This week in 5th grade, scholars finished reading the passage Hermogenes. Next week they will review stage 4 before moving on to new material after spring break.

This week in 6th grade, scholars began stage 10 of the textbook. Next week they will continue to study 1st and 2nd person plural endings.

This week in 7th grade, scholars studied the principal parts of verbs and 2nd declension masculine noun endings. Next week they will be introduced to neuter 2nd declension noun endings and the passive voice in verbs.

Art

Kindergarten

In Kindergarten art class this week we began looking at still life paintings. We studied the forms, shapes, and colors seen in still life “Curtin, Jug, and Fruit” by Paul Cézanne.

First Grade

We are continuing to work on our still life project in 1st grade art class. Scholars used watercolor pencils to paint apples. Additionally, they practiced their scissor skills in cutting out the apples and we discussed composition while gluing our projects together.

Second Grade

Second graders wrapped up their bubble form drawings and began to draw the human body. Students started their initial sketches by breaking each part up into its most basic forms and learning about classical proportions.

K-2

All classes listened to “In the Hall of the Mountain King” following a listening map. Kindergarten are still working with beats, first are learning about the quarter rest, and second grade now knows G and A as absolute notes on the treble clef staff.

Third Grade

Our Third Grade scholars have been diligently preparing for their Quarter 3 Quiz occurring this week over the newer music theory based concepts: pentatonic scales, half steps, whole steps, and the keys of the piano. For a link to our study guide, please click here.

Our music scholars are beginning to learn tempo terms (such as allegro, andante, adagio, lento, etc.) plus the term ma non troppo (“but not too much”).  These terms are used as tempo marks often seen at the beginning of each movement of music.  The Dvorak “American” String Quartet performance that we listened to has these tempo markings on the screen at the beginning of each movement: (https://video.link/w/XKuLb).  See if you can interpret for yourself what they mean from the original Italian.

 We are continuing our review of solfege (Do, Re, MI, etc.) and takadimi (rhythm) in practice so that someday when we are able to fully sing, we will be ready to read music!

P.E.

This week the scholars will run/walk for 6 minutes straight in each class.  Then they will be broken up into fitness stations the first day, and will be  taught how to play handball the second day of PE.  In Fitness stations, they will be doing sit ups, balance beam, jump boxes, tricep dips, tinickling, and planks or push-ups.  Handball is like basketball, football  and soccer all combined.  It is a very fun game that involves catching, throwing, moving and shooting. 

 

World Languages

Spanish K-1

Art

Kindergarten

This week in Kindergarten art class we practiced molding forms. We learned how to use the tips of our fingers and the palms of our hands to create a sphere, cube, and pyramid. We also practiced shading forms to create a 3D affect.

First Grade

This week in art class we began an apple still life project. We looked at still life paintings from Henri Matisse, Paul Cézanne, and Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio. We talked about spacing and overlapping in our composition.

Second Grade

In Second grade art class this week we studied sphere shapes and worked on a bubble project. Students outlined circles and added white highlights. Then they observed the many colors seen in bubbles and worked on shading the spheres to look shiny and three dimensional.

Sixth Grade

This past week, the students began work on a value exercise; they created a 5-step value scale, a gradated value scale, and a value sphere. These exercises helped introduce the students to working with light and dark and portraying highlights and shadows.

Music

Our composer of the Month for February is Edvard Grieg!

K-2

The Kindergarten classes counted how many beats in a song this week. First grade has been introduced to steps on a staff. The second grade is beginning to identify absolute pitches on the staff and learned the Musical Alphabet.

Third Grade

Last week in Third grade music, we enjoyed a great game of Let Us Chase the Squirrel vocal tag, with scholars demonstrating their ability to fit another person’s name into the original melody, as well as their courage to take a solo! This week, scholars will be putting their pentatonic knowledge to the test by reviewing our three current pentatonic scales: C Major, F Major, and G Major. We will be defining and creating “accidentals” on the five line staff: more specifically, the “flat” and “sharp” symbols.

 During the week of 2/15/21, there will be a quiz over the names of the piano keys, accidentals (sharps, flats), and our three pentatonic scales. Scholars will receive a study guide on Wednesday (2/10/21) and will take it home to study.

P.E.

All of Kindergarten through 7th grade will be participating in the Fitnessgram.  We ran the Pacer test, or Beep test with 2-7th grade. This test is designed to help your scholar learn how to pace themselves, following a beep and 15 meters.    The standards are different for every age.  This is NOT a test that will be reflected on their report cards. This is a test to help our scholars know what the standard is, and how to meet or exceed their goals.  We will help them reach those goals.  If you click the link, you can see the standards here.

Because not all students learn the  same, the same is true for athletics.  Next week, we will run a timed mile.  The Pacer test is a series of 15 meter short sprints, and the Mile is all about distance at a controlled pace that does not increase.  One child may excel at one, while the others excel at the latter.

Even our youngest scholars get excited to try to run a full mile!

World Languages

Spanish K-1

Our topic of the week is “pets.” Last week, we finished learning about caterpillars and butterflies.  Next week, we will continue learning about animals.

Spanish 2

This week, scholars will practice vocabulary in preparation to read chapter 5 of Edi el elefante. We will focus on the words mueve, las orejas, and necesitas mover. Our vocabulary quiz has been pushed to the end of class on Wednesday. Scholars may practice their vocabulary by making flashcards, practicing saying it with movement, or teaching a family member. These will go home for signatures on Monday.

Spanish 3-4

This week, we will continue to look at previous events and new vocabulary as we prepare to read chapter 6 of El capibara con botas. Scholars will look closely at the questions ¿Cómo está?, ¿Dónde está?, ¿Por qué?, and ¿Cómo es?. There will be a small quiz over the meanings of those words and other interrogatives at the end of the second class session this week.

Latin 5-7

This week in 5th grade, scholars began reading the story Hermogenes. Next week they will continue to translate the story and to analyze the words in the sentences.

This week in 6th grade, scholars continued to study the dative case. Next week they will read the story in palaestra.

This week in 7th grade, scholars continued to study the imperfect and perfect tenses. Next week we will move on to the new textbook Latin for the New Millennium.
